Innovation 5 – Step out into the Gale of Reality

Ferodo had got a solution, it was crystal clear, his team, a handful of talent, had reached his objective some months back.  There were in fact many innovations that had been proposed to solve a particular problem, which if implemented could make quite a difference to his product and the customers who really wanted it.  His team had been congratulated, along with other teams. So it surprised him that from that glorious day he was congratulated in winter, to now – late spring, nothing had happened.  Nothing at all.  He went back to his day job, and so did all the other team members.

recently heard through the grapevine that his CEO Galarbha had asked, “so how is it going then  ?”

Ferodo said to himself, and his ex team mates : “You got to be kidding me” what is going … theres no budget.. theres no project team.. “, “why ask this, doesn’t he know we all went back to our day jobs ?”

And so a new challenge.. how to get the idea out of his room into everyone else’s room.  He had not budget, but others did.  He had no team, but others did. The innovation was also not in his area of responsibility, actually belonging to another department.

And so Ferodo started on a new journey, one which took him through many parts of the massive company, one where everyone had an opinion, an experience, a reason why they did what they did, and all these seemingly conspired to prevent his idea from becoming a reality.

So having developed an idea, he had thought of the Michaelangelo, and Picasso, and others who had innovated.  Even Miles Davis came to mind.  These people had ideas, but they also had an incredible sense of voice and identity, which allowed them to be able to see an expression of the idea through others. To modify, to adapt, and to be able to express the right idea at the right time, at the leading edge of man’s desire to improve or move on.

Ferodo decided to start to work the idea through the system.  Conference call after conference call, stupid email after stupid email, but gradually as he stepped out of the innovation room, into the world at large, he found that many others had also thought of his idea, others had also come to the same conclusions.  But occasionally ideas have to come at the right time, to fill the right dreams, and the right ordering to make it all work.  Holding onto that idea, but getting out of the innovation room into the real world, really makes a tough test for an idea.  If the idea is good, it can withstand the winds of opinion and experience of the people that have to take it forward.  If it is really good, then those people outside the room will be convinced it was their idea all along, and now is their chance to take part.

It dawned on Ferodo as well, that even though others felt it was their idea, usually only part of it was, actually the only guy with all of it in his head was Ferodo.  Once again thinking of key designers and artists in particular, he realized he just had to keep the threads going and eventually something great would result.  But it’s been a while now, and Ferodo cannot even remember where his innovation room was located.  He never went back to it.  But his customers and his CEO are happy with the result.

Australia – Tectonic Magma Boat

See it wasn’t that long back that I found out, we were all really really on an island… I mean, at school, the teachers told me, I did’nt believe them.  Something wrong with my whole concept of an Island right.  Obviously Australia is an Island… got confusing, since it was such a big one, and it of itself had islands of it’s own… like Christmas Island.  Christmas Island is a part of Australia, so far from Australia it is out of site, by a long way… but close enough for people in boats to make a dash for there lives in Terra Australis… I know I know, this is what apparently we used to be called, and before that .. other things…  but relatively speaking now, I found out about the so called Northward movement of our ancient Island .. crashing bit by bit into Indonesia.. when I found out that all the Maps had to be reset to match GPS coordinates.  So eventually I guess, we just won’t be an Island any longer.. then people will not need a boat to get here..

But it will take a while… way beyond my lifetime.. in the meantime, I will just enjoy the idea of living in a continent, island, lets call it a boat, since it is floating on an apparent sea of Magma down below….slow boat.. for some time longer.  The Kookaburra’s and Kangaroos won’t mind either, living with all of us, boat people on a really slow boat to China.

A place to pray my way in Shanghai

I travelled to China a bit – lately haven’t been..  I had work in Shanghai and got to know Hen Shan Lu pretty well as well as Urumqui Lu and beyond out to Cao Bao Lu.

Shanghai Sunday was a good chance to see how people are, in the park, they do dancing in groups, or Tai Chi, or exercises or in peoples park, they sit and watch other people walking by, or peg up scrap paper notices with texta writing on lines in peoples park, looking for and interviewing prospective spouses for their kids.

A catholic mass was held in the Cathedral in Shanghai each Sunday, you could hear it in mandarin or russian.  I used to choose mandarin mass, cos they had the words up in Chinese on overhead projectors, and I used to try to at least read some of the characters.  I got to know the one for Lord at least. The beauty really is that regardless of the language, the catholic mass is the same worldwide, so you really feel at home no matter where you end up.  I get the feeling having been to probably hundreds of churches worldwide that it’s the same for many travelers.  I would meet people from everywhere, everyone praying but without a common earthly language. The weird part was that the music was often the same old hymn tunes from colonial times, but different words. How God and people of all languages get together on Sunday. You can pray when you realise its not about the words, when all the words are different for all the people sitting there.

There was a coffee shop in Shanghai, called May Coffee, run by May, and I liked going there.  It’s no longer there, and who knows where May went.  It was good coffee, and a place to relax on the way back to the hotel.  May and her friends used to meet and chat in Shanghainese.  I really had no idea what was being said, but it was quiet and peaceful there on Henshan Lu on a sunday morning.

Coltrane – Cotton Club – Ni Hao – Miles Away

Two men walk into a bar, it’s Shanghai, the cotton club, few years back.  The songs could have been like My O

ne and Only Love, or Soul Eyes.  Apart from the live house band, the place was full, but quiet and attentive,

listening….a lone trumpeter on stage, playing the harmon like Miles did, I went there with Tom, it was summer time, and hot, humid in the Shanghai days, down Hua Hai Lu. W

e got drinks, Tom knew the owner, which was good, and we got a table at the back, thats all that was left.  A soul black lady got up on stage, and sang soul/blues like the trumpeter, only really black cool, loved it. The drinks arrived, we sat back and commented on the way Shanghai had got cool, and was probably one of the really great happening places around at the time, the tallest building in the world competition was on, and Shanghai was in it to win with the tall building up in their river clouds floating up there. Cool with music and people and the girls were getting much better at the english language.  Coltrane for lovers was the mood, and Miles was the groove, Shanghai style… like imagine a bunch of expat musicians, who like Shanghai who come from countries distant to stay and form a band for a club in Shanghai.  Ni Hao Shanghai..Gan Bei !.

Immediate the lights went out, the sound of the airconditioners stopped, and we were all in a silent surprise, with no music flowing over, we were like dragged back to the new new world where blackouts really did happen occasionally… and this one.. well .. here we were sitting in the dark… one by one candles came out, more drinks, and the place took on a different flavor, like somehow candles everywhere make it shift left in the mind, and music seems more amplified already.. the guitar became acoustic, the singer, the trumpeter, more amplified by the dark and candles and lack of power.. now that is the way to drink scotch… but then the groove was good and the temperature rose,, eventually it just got too hot in there and no air.. just dark and music and the oxygen consumed by candles, untill such time as we left.  I mean it was great, but two men walked out of a bar and said.  How about a beer mate !. Ni Hao !
